IMO Appointment in Steering Group to help protect the interest of Filipino Seafarers

The Department of Foreign Affairs recently reported that Philippine Embassy in London Minister Francisco Noel Fernandez III was appointed to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Steering Group by the IMO Secretary General.

The appointment of Fernandez to the Steering Group of the IMO will provides a better chance of protecting the welfare of Filipino seafarers worldwide in the maritime industry.

The IMO regulates the shipping sector to ensure maritime safety and the protection of the marine environment through periodic reporting and attainment of standards in the operation of merchant ships. The Organization’s Steering Group is tasked to identify which reports and requirements could be simplified.

Fernandez was selected to the group together with 18 other selected government and industry representatives. The IMO Steering Group was convened at the IMO headquarters last Sept. 4, with The Netherlands' Kees Polderman as chairman.
