Department of Labour praises establishment of “Center for Seafarers”

Manila, Philippines - The Department of Labour & Employment (DOLE) lauds the partnership between a seafarer’s manning group and a local chain of malls to establish a Center for Filipino seafarers in various locations around the country.

The Joint Manning Group (JMG) and SM Supermalls recently launched the Seafarer’s Center which offers a wide array of services such as on-line job search, hiring event, career talks and more.

It also boasts of a menu of programs and services geared towards making the migrant workers’ and their families’ lives better, with its goals aligned with the DOLE’s basic thrust of promoting gainful employment opportunities.

The Philippine’s Labour Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the recently launched establishment is a tangible example of corporate social responsibility that other companies can emulate.

Baldoz also commended SM Supermalls for its employment facilitation services and the JMG for its support on DOLE’s seafarer programs and projects and for being its partner, together with its member organizations and unions, in providing better services towards the continuous development of the total well-being of the Filipino seafarers.

“Filipino seafarers should not be left in the streets to fend with all kinds of elements -- natural or man-made -- while waiting for their appointments and documents," said one of the mall’s authorities.
