Aquino promises to keep Filipino seafarers safe

Manila, Philippines – President Benigno Simeon Aquino III recently vowed to look after the welfare of Filipino seafarers especially their safety.

The Philippine President has already tapped the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to assure that his promise to the seafarers will be fully realized.

“We have already implemented the DOLE – POEA Memorandum Circular No. 2 Series of 201. This memorandum ensures that our seafarers go through rigorous training that will prepare them in all kinds of situations once they’ve boarded their ships” said Aquino.

The President also acknowledged the great contribution of seafarers to the country during his speech which was held in San Narciso, Zambales for the commencement exercises of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy.

Aquino also said that seafarers remitted $4.34 billion or 21.58% of the $ 20.12 billion worth of remittances from overseas Filipinos workers last year.
